An elephant family crosses the open grass of Amboseli National Park in Kenya, with Mount Kilimanjaro rising above them, its snow-capped summit finally clear of the clouds. We had come to Amboseli for the elephants. On every other day the mountain stayed hidden behind cloud, so I had stopped expecting it. This family was moving steadily across the savannah, young ones tucked among the adults and small white birds riding a few backs, when the cloud opened and the summit lifted into view. The wait was worth it. Amboseli's elephants have been studied continuously since 1972, and African savanna elephants are now listed as Endangered. Watching a whole family cross open ground together is the outcome that work exists to protect.
