Two African elephants cross the open plain of Amboseli National Park in Kenya, a lone acacia standing between them against a sky gone gold. A small white bird rides the back of the elephant on the left. We were headed to the lodge for dinner as the light faded, and I first saw them at a distance, two dark shapes moving back toward the trees for the night. We stopped. The silhouettes, the acacia, and the haze softening the far ridgelines had arranged themselves better than I could have asked, and dinner could wait. I had a few minutes before the color drained out of the sky. African savanna elephants are listed as Endangered, and a frame this quiet, with this much open ground around the animals, is not something I take for granted.
