The Charles Bridge runs from its stone piers in the Vltava toward the Old Town Bridge Tower in Prague, its lamps still lit along the parapet. Behind the tower the sky over the Old Town has turned from violet to orange, brightest at the exact spot where the sun is about to rise. I made this frame a few minutes after the wide view from the riverbank, once I had moved down to the water beside one of the piers. From there the bridge stopped being a line across the river and became stone close enough to read block by block. I stopped down far enough to turn the distant lamps into small stars and let a thirteen-second exposure calm the river enough to hold the sky. For those few minutes the lamps and the sunrise shared the frame. Then the lamps went out.
