From the field

The Charles Bridge reaches across the Vltava toward the Old Town Bridge Tower, its lamps still lit and their reflections spilling across the river. Above Prague the sky has turned pink and orange in the minutes before sunrise, and the water holds all of it. I came back the morning after shooting from the cobbles, this time to the riverbank, where the whole span could be seen at once and the river could carry the light. The lamps set my deadline. Once they went out, the gold would leave the water and take the picture with it. A thirteen-second exposure smoothed the surface just enough to hold the color of the sky while stretching each lamp’s reflection into a long column of gold. Then the lamps went dark, and the morning belonged to the sky.
