From the field

Lamps throw starbursts across the cobbles of the Charles Bridge in Prague, and the Old Town Bridge Tower stands dark against a sky streaked pink and violet in the blue hour before sunrise. We came that morning hoping for fog off the Vltava. The river gave us none. What it gave instead was color, the clouds lit from below and moving fast enough to smear into long brushstrokes over the rooftops of the Old Town. I had walked the bridge the morning before and knew it would not stay empty, even at that hour, so I brought a tripod and set up for a two-minute exposure. Anyone who kept walking vanished from the frame. The two figures at the left held still enough to stay, softened into ghosts against the stone parapet. The bridge was never empty that morning. The exposure only made it look that way.
